The Department of National Zoological Gardens is the pioneer institute that possesses, manage and conserve wild animals and display the animal collection to the public throughout the year in the country. The Dehiwala National Zoo, which has an exceptional gathering of outlandish and indigenous fauna, is one of the most established Zoos in Asia. Diversity of the zoo is comprised with the presence of an aquarium walk through aviary, reptile house, Butterfly Garden, an Open theatre to show case Elephant performances and a Bird paradise. The authorities have arranged a garden area inside the zoo which is rented out for birthday celebrations with selected animals on the garden premises.
The Zoological Garden is situated 11 km from the Fort – Colombo and the visitors can opt for a bus or a train to reach Dehiwala from Colombo. However, a train ride is much more convenient and more preferable.
What Time and How Long
The zoo is open daily between 8.00 a.m. and 6.00 p.m. Elephant performance starts at 5.15 p.m. daily and on weekend, there is a morning show as well. Sea Lion’s show will be held in the evening and the days can be confirmed at the main entrance. The duration to explore the wildlings of the zoological garden would be 4-5 hours.
There will be an entrance fee and will vary according to the age categories and among local visitors and foreign visitors. For school children visiting from the school uniform will be granted free entrance.
